Commander Shepard is a two timing whore

It is damn near impossible to go over everything that the Mass Effect disc contains. I ended up plowing through galaxy's main storyline in about 25 hours and I have to say that I'm more than pleased. What gets me even more excited is that I haven't even experienced the majority of this game, as proven by my lack of the "completionist" achievement. During my first play through I stuck to being a paragon (good guy), constantly asking how everyone was feeling, talking things out instead of shooting up the joint, and never getting that kick back under the table. My Shepard is a survivor of a raid that killed her parents, and also a hero that held out against the blitz. While these parts of your back can come up from time to time they aren't a huge factor in the overall story. Your decisions really do effect the world that you are playing in. While not every decision has a great effect on everything or anyone, some can determine how a certain character will act will act from then on, or even how some will see all of humanity itself.

Mass Effect's body of work is truly greater than some of the little things it tries to do. The galaxy is massive in size and in the amount of information held within it. Each race has a history and culture that is very much its own. Many do not take too kindly to humans since they are seen as the sexy new girl in class by some of the powers that be. Just about anyone you talk to across the galaxy has a story, whether it be long or short, exciting or dull, a story is still there and to be told. It could be about being your biggest fan, starting a cult, or of course something like erotic dance.

The game does have its short comings as well, but those mostly have to do with the side quests. Some side quests tend to suffer from what feels very rise and repeat. You land of a planet that is fairly barren, it has about three points on the map to go to, kill a few guys with your Mako, run inside to kill a handful of enemies or pick up item. This does not go for every planet that isn't part of the main quest, but it happens enough to where you get a little tired and just want to move on to something bigger and better. Which there is plenty of bigger and better in Mass Effect.

If you go into the game like me knowing what Bioware has done in the past, and expect a successor to KOTOR then I believe you're in for a treat. The game plays great, better than I ever thought a mash up of a shooter and RPG ever could let alone the first time out. At the same time if you're looking for something that is more along the lines of Gears of War you'll be disappointed only by the points in the game where the action slows down. I will be very excited to see a Mass Effect 2 during this generation, and will gladly download any DLC they put out there in the coming months. Mass Effect is a great start to what I hope is a franchise Bioware sticks with, they have a property and universe that is all their own to do with however they please.

For now I will play through the game again, completing more side quests, trying to be more of a bad ass, and seducing the rest of my crew.

Sony: as seen on TV

Sony's arrogance during the launch of the PS3 and the PSP is well deserved due to the fact that the PS2 is still selling units. The system should be an old brick much like my Xbox, but noooo its still ticking. Regardless, the chip on Sony's shoulder this time last year was more of a cow pie as they scoffed at the Wii and Gears of War. Fast forward(Prince of Persia style) 4 months and Gears crushed Resistance and the Wii shit on everyone. Sony stood by their statements and "figures" and didn't advertise outside of their scary baby adds and kept their head down.

After a two punches in the stomach (Spring, Summer), Sony decided to actually spend some money and make some recognizable commercials. I'm a big fan of the blend between hi-end 3-d into the in-game footage. This instantly creates a bond in the viewers head between the system and games on it. Sounds simple but Sony has blown it up until now. Congratulations Sony on advertising your product correctly, now maybe we can make our controllers rumble and talk to each other during game play.

This is the 3rd party Ps3 trailer featuring Metal Gear 4. No better way to sell the "Metal Gear Player" better than Metal Gear.

Big fan of the PSP commercial as well. Take that Michel Gondry

Episode 14: Who Ya Gonna Call? Ernie Hudson...

My post this morning is the required post that informs you that episode 14 is available for direct download and on iTunes. Brian's back with the news, Zac knows what he knows, and Max is itching for Rock Band. We hit topics such as Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty 4, our hero Bill Murray, and the gem that is the Infogrames theme song. Also this episode marks the return of an old favorite to the end of our podcast. One more note, Mass Effect shipped this morning so nothing can ruin my day.

Deep and Hard

So last episode I didn't get a chance to really talk about what I've been playing lately. Last week I finally got around to playing the Crysis demo, which surprisingly worked pretty well on my PC, given the settings were no where near high, more of a medium low mixture. The demo does a nice job of getting you to use the different features like super strength, speed, armor, and so on. While these aren't really as cool as the plasmids from Bioshock it makes for an interesting way to approach each firefight. I really don't know the story to Crysis at all, but I would love to play through this game someday in the future whenever I go through my next PC upgrade.

Bungie updated the matchmaking for Halo 3 this week and it includes what is one of my favorite gametypes, rocket race. Rocket race is quite easy to pick up, no matter what your skill level in Halo may be. It is so chaotic, I live for the moments of shooting a rocket right around the checkpoint knocking another team just off the mark and watching them frantically shuffle around to get back into their mongoose.

Now for my true time waster as of late, Puzzle Quest. After being forced to wait an extra couple days on Call of Duty 4, I decided to download Puzzle Quest on Xbox Live Arcade to pass the time. Puzzle Quest is truly a game that you intend to play for about 10-15 minutes but then come to around 3 in the morning. It is still a game that you can just play for any short amount of time, but the gameplay is so addictive and ever changing that you'll keep coming back to it for no matter how long you wish to play. I highly recommend getting this game on XBLA, it is well worth the 1,200 points, which is much cheaper than the other versions of the game.

I would go into greater detail but Assassin's Creed showed up in my mailbox as I was typing this. Expect much discussion on Call of Duty 4 and Assassin's Creed in our next podcast. Also as is necessary with anything related to Assassin's Creed, I close with the required picture of Jade Raymond.

Mother pus bucket...

Wh0 you gonna call? Thats right kids, Ghostbusters 3 coming to a console near you. I really don't know much about it, all that I've heard is that Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd are writing the games script, and the original cast will be reprising there characters for this project! HOW FUCKING COOL IS THAT! This would be a game that I'd get the special edition dvd and watch the making of. I can't wait to see where Ramis and Aykroyd will take the characters next. My worry is of course that the game will be an utter pile of garbage with the license just slapped on to it, but I have faith in the writers to be true to the fans, and try to keep it as funny and cleaver as the original films.

Turn it up to... 4 maybe 5....

Less than one week away from the release of Rock Band and my drum blisters can't wait to get reopened. But for some (morons), the pre-verbal rocking may be not so loud. Here at scissors61, we are huge fans of Game Fly and their rental service; we play everything without paying for everything. They offer a service of superb quality and make you feel happy to throw 20 bucks at them once a month. But all that might change for some subscribers (morons) who decide to rent Rock Band from them next week, because it comes with NO peripherals!

Now I was the first to scratch my head at the fact that they were renting out Guitar Hero, but you could technically play that with a controller, if you like punishing yourself and drinking glue. I look forward to seeing youtube videos of bottom dwellers playing the game with 3 controllers and their mom singing into a wired headset.

Before you say "that will never happen", I would like to remind the jury of the guy who beat Soul Caliber on DreamCast with the fishing rod controller.

Episode 13: I took your sister to prom

Zac Ross joins the podcast in episode 13. Rommate of Brian Mihaich, he is a simple actor who has befriended many gamers over time but is not a gamer himself. He just wants to watch From Hell on his Playstation 3, frag 11 year olds in Halo 3, and play Paint it Black on Guitar Hero 3. If you've never "heared" an astronaut say super duper then this is the episode for you.
